SAMR. We hear the strange acronym and become perplexed! However it is quite simple! This model guides us through purposeful and effective technology integration. You have to ask yourself, "Am I using technology for the sake of using technology or is there an outcome or goal I am seeking to reach?" Too often we start a project and it develops as we progress. With SAMR we have to begin with the end in mind. What real world product or project do you wish to create with technology that was not possible before? What standards or concepts will this cover?
Throughout my career I created many projects such as posters, book reports, sculptures and brochures. They were created by hand with markers, glitter and glue. Today, students can accomplish the same projects with greater depth using technology. Even better yet, they are creating real world projects that will be encountered in the work place and college. Best of all, SAMR allows for higher level questions that drive product creation. Demonstration of understanding is much more effective than the regurgitation of facts.
So you ask WHY? It is simple! Students want relevancy! If the assignment matters to them most often they will put forth the effort required for successful completion and learning. What worked for me or you in school does not work anymore. Why? Students today are not like students ten years ago or twenty years ago. Whether we like it or not, this is the reality! So, we are going to meet them in their world - their world of technology!
