I receive countless emails during the week with app suggestions for students and adults alike. Over the past few days, several websites and apps have caught my attention and I thought I would share a few with you. Keep in mind that I do not believe these are the best apps or websites available. Rather, I find them to be extremely useful and time-worthy.
KNOWBullying: This app gives parents, guardians, teachers, and caregivers guidance regarding bullying. How do you start these conversations? What do you need to know? What should your children or students know? We all have these questions and would love to have a guide on the side to help us along. This app can serve as that guide as you empower your children or students to handle bullying situations online and offline.
Common Sense Media: Are you unsure about your child viewing a movie? Not sure how to talk with your children about filtering authentic news and fake news? Do you need more information about education related government issues? Perhaps you want to see if a video game is safe for your child. Common Sense media covers a wide array of topics such as ratings for media (movies, games, TV, Apps, Websites, Devices), Parent Concerns, News and Advice, Research, Family Guides, and more. While this is not a new website, it is important to note that the developers keep all content and reviews up to date. Take a moment to put this short link on your smartphone as a go to for advice!
Google Family Link: Let's face it! We all spend too much time on our devices whether it be for work, reading, playing games, or leisurely browsing of websites and social media. As adults we tend to have a bit more control over balance and appropriate apps. However, we still need to be a guide for our children. Google Family Link is specifically for children under age 13 that have an approved Android Phone that will work with this app (check the linked website for a list). Once you register as a parent or guardian, you can manage the apps your children download, monitor screen time and set screen time limits, and lock the device at bedtime. I'll be suggesting this for all of my nieces and nephews. Learning balance before adulthood is so critical!
