So, you might say this is just a math and science celebration. Not so! There are plenty of ways that all content areas can participate in a five minute period or one class period. It is up to you!

- The SVMS Coding Club, SVHS iCats along with some guests are going to code a Raspberry Pi in honor of Pi Day on Friday, March 13th. Join us by celebrating!!

MATH

Best deal on pizza? Let's find out!

Choose a local pizzeria that offers round pizzas in small, medium and large sizes, and order one of each. Have the students take the radius and find the area of each pizza. Next, have the students divide the cost of each pizza by the area to arrive at the price per square inch. Using the three prices per square inch, kids can accurately determine the best pizza value. Once that question is answered, everyone can eat the pizza.

HEALTH

Where does your birthday fall in the number sequence of Pi? Head to this Pi-Search Page and type in the digits representing your birthday. This took 2 minutes. It could be fun to see if any of the student's positions are near one another. Put students in order according to their position. Does this match their birthdays? Could be interesting. A great 10 minute activity.

HISTORY

How about a friendly debate about what Pi equals? Does it equal 3? Did a state legislature really try to declare it to be three? Check it out here and delve into a discussion with your class.

ENGLISH

Poetry can truly be of great help with the memorization of Pi. Try having your students write a mnemonic rap or poem to memorize at least 20 digits of pi.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Super Size Pi!

This activity can involve an entire class or school. Choose one student to stand in the middle of the gym, or in warmer climates, the school sports field. This student will hold one end of a known length of string, and a second student will walk the other end of the string around to form a circle, placing the remaining students evenly to form the circle’s circumference. When finished, students should represent a nice and round—albeit large—circle. Use a tape measure (or measuring wheel, if your circle is large enough) to find the diameter, using the center student to help measure through the circle’s center. Finally, measure the circumference and have students calculate for pi. Need some help calculating?
